Delhi Dancing is a colourful Bollywood-inspired team-building experience led by professional performers. Delegates learn expressive Indian dance movements in smaller teams before bringing their routines together for an upbeat group finale.
No dance experience is necessary. The performers demonstrate the movements and help nervous participants settle into the activity. The goal is to create an enjoyable shared performance, not to discover who has secretly been attending dance classes.
Teams learn slightly different sections of choreography. When those sections are performed at the same time, they combine into one much larger routine, giving delegates the satisfaction of seeing how their separate efforts contribute to the finished display.
An extended version can give teams the opening and closing movements while asking them to devise a short section of their own. This adds creativity, decision-making and a friendly performance challenge to the experience.
It can include some light-hearted competition when teams create and present their own routines. However, the emphasis remains on participation, confidence and the combined finale rather than placing less experienced dancers under pressure.
Costumes and colourful props can be incorporated to help participants enter into the spirit of the performance. An optional bindi may also be offered, allowing delegates to choose their own level of involvement.
The standard icebreaker runs for approximately one hour. It is an effective length for opening a conference, reviving the room after a long presentation or creating an energetic transition between parts of a company event.
Delhi Dancing is suitable for groups of approximately 10 to 500 delegates. Splitting a large audience into teams keeps people actively involved before the different routines are reunited for the final performance.
Comfortable clothing and secure footwear are sensible because the session involves movement, turning and light exercise. If Delhi Dancing is being added to a formal conference, delegates can be advised about the activity beforehand so they arrive prepared.
It asks colleagues to learn together, overcome self-consciousness and support one another in a highly visible challenge. The laughter and shared finale help break down barriers, making it particularly effective for conference groups that need an early boost of energy.
